Under the Climate Crisis and Conflict Response Project, implemented by Juba Foundation with support from ShelterBox, a practical training on mudbrick maintenance and sustainable housing techniques was successfully conducted in Doolow.

The training brought together a diverse group of community members, including women and elderly men, equipping them with essential skills to maintain safer and more durable homes.

Addressing Climate and Conflict Challenges

Communities in Doolow continue to face the combined impacts of climate shocks and conflict, which often damage homes and infrastructure. This training aimed to strengthen local capacity by providing practical, hands-on knowledge in maintaining mudbrick houses—one of the most widely used and affordable housing solutions in the region.

Participants gained skills on:

  • Repairing cracks and structural damage
  • Reinforcing mudbrick walls for improved durability
  • Protecting homes from rain and environmental wear
  • Using cost-effective, locally available materials

Inclusive Community Participation

The training emphasized inclusivity and community engagement, with strong participation from women and elderly men. Women were empowered with practical skills to improve household resilience, while older participants contributed valuable traditional knowledge, enriching the learning experience for all.

Promoting Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Housing

Mudbrick construction remains a sustainable and environmentally friendly building method. Through this initiative, Juba Foundation promoted:

  • Climate-resilient housing practices
  • Sustainable use of local materials
  • Community-driven maintenance solutions

Building Stronger, Resilient Communities

This activity is part of Juba Foundation’s broader efforts under the Climate Crisis and Conflict Response Project to support vulnerable communities in adapting to environmental and social challenges. With the generous support of ShelterBox, the initiative continues to strengthen resilience and improve living conditions across affected regions.

The mudbrick maintenance training in Doolow marks an important step toward empowering communities with practical skills and sustainable solutions. Participants are now better equipped to protect and maintain their homes, contributing to a safer and more resilient future.
